 PLANNING YOUR SUMMER VACATION

January 26, 2021 was the "National Plan Your Summer Vacation" Day!  You may have missed it, I did.  But it isn't too late to still make plans.
Critical components to a successful vacation include time constraints, budgets, things to see, things to do plus in 2021, health and safety concerns.

BUDGETS

Vacation costs vary.  In a lodging rate survey of our members listed below, the average rate for staying in the Paradise area is  15 - 20% less expensive then a stay on the Lake Erie, Wisconsin, or Minnesota Great Lakes shorelines.

Crossing Mighty Mac Bridge:  Cost $5.00 per vehicle.  The suspension bridge is 5 miles long connecting St. Ignace, Michigan to Mackinaw City.  If you are lucky you'll spot a freighter traveling through the Straits of Mackinaw and under the bridge.

Eat well at your Cabin.  Save on food and restaurant costs by preparing meals at your cabin.  Nothing beats campfire roasted hot dogs followed by roasted marshmallows.

Oswald's Bear Ranch charges $20.00 entry fee per car entering the ranch.  There is an additional fee if you wish to feed the bears.

Spend the day at Tahquamenon Falls State Park.  An annual  Michigan State Park Passport costs $12.00 for Michigan residents if purchased with their driver's license renewal, $17.00 otherwise.  This pass gets you in any state park, multiple times each day if desired all year long.  This is a great value.  In Paradise you will have access to the Upper Falls, Lower Falls, river mouth, and roadside parks.  Non Michigan residents can purchase a one day pass for $9.00 or a yearly pass for $35.00.  Remember that gives to entry to all Michigan State Parks for the year.

There is no charge to visit the Soo Locks, Point Iroquois Lighthouse, Whitefish Point shoreline, Whitefish Point Bird Observatory, Hamilton Lake Natural Area, Eckerman Pond, Crisp Point Light.

The Vagabond Motel located in Paradise offers the best lodging value in town.  The Magnuson Grand Lakefront Paradise offers many additional services with their accommodations such as breakfast, indoor pool, sauna, lake views and lake access.  Cabins are available at Paradise Shores Cabins, Curley's Paradise Motel, and the Vagabond.

Schedule your accommodations early!

HEALTH AND SAFETY

The CDC continues to recommend wearing face masks, social distancing, and caution when dealing with COVID 19 virus.  The vaccine is not a guarantee that you will not contract the virus but most of us expect the vaccine to lighten the load on our antibodies.

Businesses will continue to take extra measures in cleaning their facilities and will post their masks and social distancing requirements on their doors.  Your patience and kindness to people is always appreciated.

Downtown Paradise Michigan

The Paradise area is not a heavily populated region.  The picture above is provided by Terry Humphrey from August 2020, the busy season.  There is one blinking light and two lanes (north and south) on Michigan State Route 123.  The Paradise community includes most of Whitefish Township in Chippewa County, Michigan with a population of 570 people or not quite 2 people per square mile.  The Upper Peninsula averages 18.9 people per square mile, compared to the state of Michigan at 174 people per square mile.  If you are considering Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, they have a foundation of 545 people per square mile.

There are many great places to visit while you are in the area.  During the peak season you may find greater numbers at the Tahquamenon Falls State Park or at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum.  To avoid crowds

Schedule your visit early and verify cancellation procedures!
