the Ultimate Winter Experience | Dog Sledding

In a previous article we made suggestions for a one day excursion in the Paradise area, then offered suggestions for a second day.  Ultimately, you'll want to test your muster with dog sleds; a means of transportation used in many snow laden communities for hundreds of years.

After a day or two exploring the trails, trade your snowshoes or snowmobile for a dog sled. Nature’s Kennel in McMillan, Michigan offers various dog sledding adventure rides in the heart of Tahquamenon Country. With various guided tour options that range from half day jaunts to full-day fun, their seasoned guides are sure to keep you safe while you ride along or drive your own dog team through pristine forest trails.

Michigan's Premier Dog Sledding Destination is only 55 miles from Paradise.  Take M123 toward Newberry to M28. Turn west on M28. At McMillan turn north onto CR415/McMillan Avenue to arrive at Nature’s Kennel.  Go ahead a make the plunge for the ultimate snow experience!

Experience Winter in Michigan's Paradise | Two Day Itinerary

If you have an opportunity to spend two days in the Paradise area during the winter months, we recommend four activities on the first day:

On your second day, we recommend that you start your day with a Lumberjack breakfast at the Berry Patch then rent a snowmobile.  Take  Trail #452 to Whitefish Point; catch Trail 8 near Bear Lake and travel to Crisp Point.  Be sure to confirm your travel route on the trail map.

Eat lunch at Pine Stump Junction then catch County Road 414 reconnecting to Trail 452 and wind your way back to Paradise stopping at Tahquamenon Falls State Park and stretch your legs walking to the Upper Falls or enjoy a hot cup of coffee at Camp 33.

For dinner we recommend THE INN, Smokehouse and Gastropub in Paradise.  They offer a menu of hearty smokehouse meats to top off a day of trail blazing fun.  You just have to stop in and GET SOME!!!

There are some 120 miles of groomed snowmobile trails.  Tahquamenon Falls State Park has trails set for cross-country skiers, and snow shoe enthusiasts.  The Tahquamenon Country Pathways Association grooms the local Paradise Pathway trail, just west of Paradise.  They groom that trail for cross-country skiers and snowshoers.  To stay informed as to weather and trail conditions, follow trail groomer reports (Paradise Area Night Riders ), weather reports (weatherbug.com), or a local weather camera hosted by the Vagabond located in town!

Experience Snowfall in Paradise

Compliments Photographer Terry Humphrey

November 6, 2019, Sherry at Gene's Tahquamenon General Store located near the entrance of Tahquamenon Falls State Park Lower Falls posted on their Facebook page,
"Well,Ole" man Winter has arrived !! Ugh!!! Wasn't quite ready, but since last Saturday night until today we've probably gotten 13" of snow, if you go to Newberry or south of Paradise there's NO snow, WOW!!"

Her comments regarding snowfall in the eastern Upper Peninsula provides a clue as to the wide variation in snow levels in the region from Paradise to Newberry to Eckerman, Whitefish Point, and Sault Ste. Marie.

Whitefish Point Road travels 11.2 miles north of Paradise from the intersection of Michigan's Scenic Byway, M-123 along Whitefish Bay to Whitefish Point.  For each mile north, the daily snowfall easily increases one-half inch each mile.  The National Weather Service (NOAA) provides the following data in tracking six seasons.  Unfortunately Paradise did not have a weather station in service during the season of 2014 - 2015.   The two stations are approximately 1.5 miles apart, south to north.

Be safe in your endeavors to enjoy the winter season.  A measure of a Whitefish Township resident's stamina is the number of winters endured.  A measure of a visitor's enjoyment is the number of miles snowmobiled, snow-shoed, cross-country skiied, mushed or photographed!

Winter Get-a-Way | One Day Trip Itinerary

Tahquamenon Upper Falls Extreme Winter Conditions
Winter is an incredible season!  There is so much to do: snow shoeing, cross-country skiing, snow boarding, snow snowmobiling, fat-biking, mushing, lantern-lit trails, sightseeing, photo opportunities, hot chocolates, bomb fires, friends, and conversations.    You have one day to get away and experience Winter in Michigan's Paradise.

A must see and do for a one day stay is Tahquamenon Falls State Park!  Open year round, the park offers an incredible view of the Upper Falls.   Park in the parking lot then take a less than 1/2 mile hike on a paved pathway to view the Upper Falls.  This area is kept passable through the winter months.  Snowmobilers park their sleds in the parking lot and take a stroll.  These pictures reveal an extreme scene and a conventional winter shot.  Regardless, the falls are breath taking.

Each Saturday in February, tradition has it that park staff members set up a groomed, lantern-lit cross-ski trail to enjoy.  The park office offers snowshoe instruction or a guided snowshoe hike and gear free to use Saturdays in February as well.
Tahquamenon Upper Falls Winter Wonderland

After hiking the trail, stop in at Camp 33, Tahquamenon Falls Brewer and Pub located at the Tahquamenon Falls State Upper Falls.and enjoy a  Black Bear Stout from their list of Micro-brewed in house beers as you swap stories with your friends.

The lower falls is a series of five falls cascading in the midst of the river as it circles a small island.  Again, it is a short walking distance from the parking lot.  Coming to Paradise, one day?  Check out the Falls, take a snowshoe hike, and visit the micro-brewery.  Add another day to your itinerary?

The average snowfall in the Paradise region is 200+ inches each year making this area in the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan, a pristine winter playground.  You can either choose to snuggle with a hot cup of cocoa and a great book, enjoying the winter landscape from the comfort of your room or join your friends in some of the most invigorating and breathtaking fun; the envy of your stay-at-home friends.   Be sure to pack your camera as evidence; as your friends just won't be believe you.
Paradise Area Night Rider Volunteers Trail Prep
The Paradise region has Lake Superior located to the north and east, Tahquamenon Falls State park to the west and the National Hiawatha Forest to the south making the zone an ideal location to explore by foot or machine in all seasons; in the winter, you can explore with snowshoes, snowboard, cross-country skies, fat tires, or snowmobiles.  There are specifically 120+ miles of groomed snowmobile trails in the Paradise area connecting you to the western Upper Peninsula and Wisconsin to the west with Brimley and Sault Ste Marie in the East.  The snowmobile trails are groomed by the Paradise Area Night Riders.  You can get trail reports directly from the groomers on their website or Facebook page.  Members of their team have already started getting the trails in shape before the first snow fall.
TCPA Volunteers Trail Prep

Are quiet sports more your style?  Members of the Tahquamenon Country Pathways Association (TCPA) grooms Paradise Pathways for cross-country skiing and snowshoes.  Paradise Pathways is located just west of Paradise on M-123.  There is an exceptional trail head there with two trails, one south of M-123 near the trail head and one north of M-123.  Trail condition reports are posted on their Facebook page  and information about quiet trails in the region listed on their website.

Meandering through the region is the North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT).  Groomed and maintained by area volunteers organized as the Hiawatha Shore-to-Shore (HSS) NCT Chapter, this group sponsors a number of events through the year!  But have no fears the NCT Trail is well marked with their nationally known as blue blazes.  As in "Where in the blue blazes are you."  Unsure?  Join the group on their first hike on the first and kick off the new year with a hike for the health of it!  Check out their Facebook page for upcoming activities!

Lake Superior Shoreline Hike

Encompassing 50,000 acres, the Tahquamenon Falls State Park is host to some 40 miles of hiking trails including a portion of the NCT Trail. Build your own snowshoes in one of their popular snowshoe building workshops or enjoy a lantern lit trail Saturday evening in January or February.  Stay in the know with their schedule on their Facebook page.  Most importantly warm up after your winter fun at Camp  33, a micro brewery located conveniently at the Upper Falls accessible by snow shoe or snowmobile.  The Upper Falls are a must see in the winter months, be sure to include a stop there and capture a photo to your Instagram account.  Winter camping is also available at the park.

23 Treasures to Experience Michigan's Paradise!

The brilliant sunlight of summer is waning as the days grow shorter.  Children and young adults have returned to school; the hustle and bustle of the summer family vacation tourist season has slowed, the days are cooler and the nights even more so.  Mother nature is reminding us to take note; the seasons are changing and it is time for us to reflect and to prepare as time passes.
Tahquamenon Scenic Byway
Within the Paradise area, there are two popular routes to enjoy in any season, but particularly in autumn:  the longest route, Tahquamenon Scenic Byway and America's Scenic Byway: Whitefish Bay Scenic Byway.  For the purposes of this article, let's focus on the 63 mile, Michigan state designated, Tahquamenon Scenic Byway.  Warning:  The distance may be brief but the time it takes to explore any number of these points requires some time so relax and spend some time to experience Michigan's Paradise.

One of this writer's favorites is a quiet, quaint spot along the Tahquamenon Scenic Byway, the

 1) Eckerman Pond located on state route M-123 just north of Eckerman near the intersection of M-123 and M-28. This location is a paddler's dream.  The cool running waters and gentle breezes invite you to relax, fish for trout, and take in the history of this one time trout hatchery grounds.

Autumn in the Eastern Upper Peninsula
2)  Traveling north on M-123 to Paradise, the gateway to the Tahquamenon Falls State Park, you'll find a sign directing you to the Curley Lewis Memorial Highway; that's a route for another time.   As you continue north you'll come to the Tahquamenon Rivermouth.

3) There is one park, south of the rivermouth that has a boat ramp and river access for fishing.  You'll need a MI state park pass to park here for any length of time as this is a part of the Tahquamenon Falls State Park.

4) North of the rivermouth, there is a wonderful road side park, again a port of the state park,  with beach access to Lake Superior's Whitefish Bay.  This area tends to be shallow; a little warmer for folks to actually get their feet wet.

5) Be sure to stop for lunch at The Inn, Gastropub and Smokehouse to recharge with a succulent pulled pork sandwich before heading further north to one of the World's top 10 rated mar-i-time museums, the

6)  Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum.  The museum shares stories of many wrecks in the Great Lakes region includin the incredible Edmund Fitzgerald.  The museum is open through October!
Rock Hounding at Whitefish Point

7) To explore the shores of Whitefish Point and

8) climb the Whitefish Lighthouse, just continue north at the blinking light in Paradise along Whitefish Point Road. While at the point you'll want to take note of  the

 9)  Whitefish Point Observatory owned and managed by the Michigan Audubon Society documenting the distribution and abundance of birds in the Great Lakes Region, with special emphasis on migration and habitat.  This region is a major North American Bird Migration route.

10) When you return to Paradise, stop at the Berry Patch for a cup of coffee and blueberry pie before venturing west to the Tahquamenon Falls State Park. Two must-do stops at Tahquamenon Falls State Park,

 11) Lower Falls, a combination of some five smaller falls that cascade around an island.you are encouraged to explore and the

12) Upper Falls, the 2nd largest falls east of the Mississippi.  Listening to and seeing the waters cascade along the wilderness Tahquamenon River is breath taking.  Each location offers paths to walk to the natural sights with benches here and there to rest a spell.  The Tahquamenon Falls State Park has more than 22 miles of  hiking trails, the most well known is that portion which is a share of the

Tahquamenon Wilderness River Overlook North Country Trail

13) North Country National Scenic Trail, a project spanning  2,880 miles across seven states.  The most popular is the hike between the lower and upper falls.  After your hike, stop in at the microbrewery,

14) Camp 33 located next to the parking lot at the Upper Falls.  Kick back with local favorite, a stout black bear ale.

15) Experience a water trail by stopping in at the Woods, west of the Upper Falls entrance.  Take this opportunity to paddle one of their canoes or kayaks or take a guided tour that includes a narrative of the history, culture, and science of the region.  You'll walk away from this adventure with the experience of a lifetime.  Sometimes you simply have to leave the pavement to take in all the components of the region.

16)  Crisp Point Lighthouse where culture and history is well preserved and accessible along the Tahquamenon Scenic Byway near county road 500. Take note that GPS signals and transmissions may not provide accurate directions to reach these remote outliers.  But catching this sentinel along the magnificent shores of Lake Superior is an adventure well worth the drive.
National Hiawatha Forrest

17) Oswald's Bear Ranch is a must stop for the family and children of all ages.   This bear rescue operation is open through September and offers a means of experiencing bears in as much a natural habitat is possible.

18) Two Hearted river immortalized by author Hemingway is a local favorite for fishing, paddling, and exploration. The rivermouth empties into Lake Superior.

19) Muskallonge Lake State Park is 217 acres located between Muskallonge Lake and Lake Superior, the former site of a lumbering camp and Indiana encampment.   Maybe you can plan your visit around the time of a

 20)   Tahquamenon Logging Museum  Lumberjack Breakfast.  The last breakfast in 2019 is scheduled for Saturday, September 28.

21) Luce County Historical Museum provides visitors with an inside look of a restored Sheriff's residence and jail.  The 63 mile Tahquamenon Scenic Byway includes a stop at the

22) Hamilton Lake Natural Area offering a park bench and moderate hiking trail.  While not located on M-123, the
Tahquamenon Falls Narrow Gauge Train Ride

23) Tahquamenon Falls Riverboat Ride is located just east of Newberry on M-28.  This is a must stop to learn more about the Tahquamenon River basin region from the experts while taking in a ride on their riverboat or train.

The Tahquamenon Scenic Byway is a route that traverses from Michigan state route M-28 south of Eckerman in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan north through Eckerman, the Hiawatha National Forest, Paradise and the Tahquamenon Falls State Park, second largest state park in Michigan.   The route continues through Luce County, Newberry and returns to state route M-28 south of Newberry.  The shape of it is similar to a horseshoe but the wealth of sites, history, and culture abound.  Be sure to plan several stops along this scenic byway as it adds beautiful scenic memories to your story.
