Gearing UP for the Winter Season in Paradise!

North Country National Scenic Trail Tahquamenon Wilderness River Overlook

The average snowfall in the Paradise region is 200+ inches each year making this area in the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan, a pristine winter playground.  You can either choose to snuggle with a hot cup of cocoa and a great book, enjoying the winter landscape from the comfort of your room or join your friends in some of the most invigorating and breathtaking fun; the envy of your stay-at-home friends.   Be sure to pack your camera as evidence; as your friends just won't be believe you.

The Paradise region has Lake Superior located to the north and east, Tahquamenon Falls State park to the west and the National Hiawatha Forest to the south making the zone an ideal location to explore by foot or machine in all seasons; in the winter, you can explore with snowshoes, snowboard, cross-country skies, fat tires, or snowmobiles.  There are specifically 120+ miles of groomed snowmobile trails in the Paradise area connecting you to the western Upper Peninsula and Wisconsin to the west with Brimley and Sault Ste Marie in the East.  The snowmobile trails are groomed by the Paradise Area Night Riders.  You can get trail reports directly from the groomers on their website or Facebook page.  Members of their team have already started getting the trails in shape before the first snow fall.

Are quiet sports more your style?  Members of the Tahquamenon Country Pathways Association (TCPA) grooms Paradise Pathways for cross-country skiing and snowshoes.  Paradise Pathways is located just west of Paradise on M-123.  There is an exceptional trail head there with two trails, one south of M-123 near the trail head and one north of M-123.  Trail condition reports are posted on their Facebook page  and information about quiet trails in the region listed on their website.

Meandering through the region is the North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT).  Groomed and maintained by area volunteers organized as the Hiawatha Shore-to-Shore (HSS) NCT Chapter, this group sponsors a number of events through the year!  But have no fears the NCT Trail is well marked with their nationally known as blue blazes.  As in "Where in the blue blazes are you."  Unsure?  Join the group on their first hike on the first and kick off the new year with a hike for the health of it!  Check out their Facebook page for upcoming activities!

Lake Superior Shoreline Hike

Encompassing 50,000 acres, the Tahquamenon Falls State Park is host to some 40 miles of hiking trails including a portion of the NCT Trail. Build your own snowshoes in one of their popular snowshoe building workshops or enjoy a lantern lit trail Saturday evening in January or February.  Stay in the know with their schedule on their Facebook page.  Most importantly warm up after your winter fun at Camp  33, a micro brewery located conveniently at the Upper Falls accessible by snow shoe or snowmobile.  The Upper Falls are a must see in the winter months, be sure to include a stop there and capture a photo to your Instagram account.  Winter camping is also available at the park.
